Fort Myers

Fort Myers makes up part of the Cape Coral in Fort Myers Metropolitan area and is located in the center of Lee County. Fort Myers is home to about 65,000 residents and was established in 1886 as the governmental hub of Lee County. It’s also considered the Gateway to the Southwest Florida region and home to many tourist destinations, seasonal residents and year-round locals.

Fort Myers was one of the first forts built along the Coloosahatchee River and was a base of operations against the Seminole Indians. Originally named Fort Harvey it was renamed in 1850 after Col. Abraham C Myers who was the son-in-law of the forts founder and Cmdr. After the Indians surrendered and moved west the Fort was abandoned until 1863 when Union Army troops reoccupied it during the Civil War.

In 1866 the first settlers arrived from Key West and it soon became the second largest city after Tampa on Florida’s West Coast. In the late 1890s, Fort Myers was one of the first nationally known winter resorts after the construction of the Royal Palm Hotel. Access became even easier after the opening of the extension of the Atlantic coastline Railroad from Punta Gorda to Fort Myers in 1904. In 1924, the Tamiami Trail bridge was constructed across the Caloosahatchee River and the city experienced its first real estate boom. Since then many subdivisions and communities have sprouted up throughout the city.

Fort Myers maintains a temperature from about 75 to 95° year-round with the lowest temperatures in January and February and the highest hitting in July through September.
